Grammar: The past simple tense: irregular verbs
Positive:
Many common verbs have an irregular past form.

infinitive
past simple

do
I did it last week.

see
We saw him yesterday.


The irregular form is the same for all persons.

Negative, questions, short answers:
Negative, questions, and short answers are the same as for regular verbs.
I didn’t go to the USA.
I didn’t buy a car.
Did you have a good holiday?
Did you see James yesterday?
Yes, we did
No, I didn’t.
Use:
We use the past simple tense to describe
a completed action in the past
I saw him yesterday.
a completed situation in the past
I lived in Paris from 1988 to 1993.
a repeated action in the past
They went to Spain every year until 1995.
